Dr. Phat Nguyen, M.D., was born in Saigon, South Vietnam, in 1969.    After the Communist takeover of South Vietnam in 1975, his parents tried to escape and was captured.    He spent time in a Communist prison at the age of 7.

His family came to the U.S. as political refugees in 1983.  They arrived in America with 2 suitcases and zero money but with a lot of hope for the future.   Without knowing a word of English, he attended Cupertino High School.   His first job in America was a summer job at the end of his sophomore year when he worked as a janitor for his own high school.     He shared his first paycheck with his brothers' and sister's to buy a Made-in-USA VCR (before the age of massive outsourcing of American manufacturing jobs to China) which he still keeps after all these years.    He worked at fast-food restaurants as a cook during his college years.    He became a naturalized American citizen in 1989.    He earned a bachelor degree with Honors in Computer Science from the University of California at Davis and a master's degree in business (Management Science) from Stanford University.   At Stanford, he studied economics and entrepreneurship.    He taught Computer Science at Evergreen Valley College in East San Jose.

He has extensive international experience.    Besides growing up in Asia and traveling extensively around the world, he has lived and worked in Europe and studied French, Italian, and Spanish.     He worked as a software engineer and an entrepreneur over the years in Silicon Valley.   Before attending medical school, he volunteered at the Pacific Free Clinic, the Stanford medical clinic that provides free health care to the poor, underprivileged, and uninsured patients in East San Jose.    He has written for a number of publications in both English and Vietnamese; his essay was published by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies at Yale University.     He studied medicine at a university in the Netherlands with clinical training at Louisiana State University, George Washington, Downstate New York, John Hopkins, Yale and Stanford Universities' affiliated teaching hospitals.

Bác sĩ Phát sinh ra ở Sài Gòn, Nam Việt Nam, năm 1969.  Sau bie^'n co^' 30 tha'ng Tu+, Na(m 1977, gia đình anh cố gắng trốn thoát và bị bắt.  Anh đã o+? một  thời gian trong nhà tù Cộng sản ở tuổi 7.    Mẹ là một giáo su+ tại trường nu+~ trung ho.c DDo^`ng Kha'nh ta.i Hue^', Vo? Anh là cháu trai của Bác sĩ/Tiến sĩ Trần Vỹ ( cậu ), cựu Bộ Trưởng Y Tế (1956-1961), cựu giáo sư y khoa trường đại học  Y Khoa Sài Gòn, cựu giám đốc Trung Tâm Quốc Gia Nghiên Cứu Khoa Học Việt Nam.

Anh cũng là cháu trai ( cậu ),  của chie^'n sĩ  Trần  Hồng, người đã  ủi xa^.p cửa  toa` Đại sứ quán Việt Nam tại Paris, Pha'p.

Gia đình anh đến Mỹ theo die^.n tị nạn chính trị vào năm 1983.  Anh ho.c ta.i Cupertino High School và De Anza College. Công việc đầu tiên của anh ở Mỹ là một công việc mùa hè vào cuối năm thứ hai của anh khi anh làm người que't ra'c cho trường trung học của mình.  Anh trở thành công dân quốc tịch Mỹ vào năm 1989.   Anh được bằng cử nhân danh dự về khoa học máy tính từ Đại học California tại Davis và bằng thạc sĩ về Khoa học Quản Lý từ Đại học Stanford. Tại Stanford, anh học Kinh tế và Doanh nghiệp.   Anh được bằng Bác sĩ từ Đại học o+? Hoa` Lan.

Bên cạnh việc đi du lịch rộng rãi trên khắp thế giới, anh cũng đã sống và làm việc ở châu Âu. Anh làm việc như một kỹ sư phần mềm và doanh nhân trong những năm qua ở Thung Lu?ng Hoa Va`ng.
